Understanding Toxicity Chemistry DefinitionIn today's society, the term 'toxicity' has come to represent more than just a dangerous chemical. It is also synonymous with chemical security. In some cases, the term toxicity refers to things that pose physical, psychological or emotional harm. In other cases, it may refer to the state of a system when it is subjected to change or disturbance due to the introduction of new substances, the suppression of existing substances or changes in the environment.Modern chemistry defines toxicity as the phenomena of harmful effects produced by the interaction of molecules with each other. The effects produced by toxicity are determined by the molecules themselves. Any interaction between molecules is toxic. The factors that determine the threshold levels of toxicity are referred to as toxic threshold values, with the lowest values being considered to be non-toxic and the highest values considered to be toxic.There are two different types of chemical toxicity, namely reactive and non-reactive. Both types of chemical toxicity have to do with the actions of a molecule or group of molecules. A reactive chemical toxicity is caused by a reaction between a molecule and an external factor. A non-reactive chemical toxicity is caused by a reaction between a molecule and an internal factor.One type of reactive chemical toxicity is the 'acute toxicity' that is caused by the interaction of a substance with a receptor. This receptor is known as the immune system. In order to get rid of the threat, the immune system activates various systems including the inflammatory response. On the other hand, a reactive chemical toxicity is called 'chronic toxicity' when it has been induced by a long period of exposure, such as for prolonged periods of time. In such situations, the body would already be suffering from an insult, which could at least be prevented by cessation of the exposure.One type of non-reactive chemical toxicity is called a 'toxic' i f it leads to a reaction in the body when there is an interruption in the exposure to the toxic substance. It can either produce other kinds of chemical toxicity or cause health problems that are irreversible. When the agent being used in the substance is toxic, it is said to have a toxicokinetic property. Toxins, when released from the body, circulate throughout the blood stream and are taken up by the organs.The toxic nature of an agent may be classified as either specific or general. Specific is when an agent specifically causes any one kind of damage to a particular type of tissue or organ or generates symptoms or signs which are unique to that type of tissue or organ. General has both specific and generalized symptoms that are dependent on the type of tissue or organ involved.The human body is constantly exposed to chemical agents. These agents are either absorbed or metabolized in the body. It is important that the body is ready for any potential injury or threat that it may e ncounter from any source. In this case, knowing the characteristics of chemical toxicity will help the individual to be prepared to react appropriately.
